How To Take Care Of Your Braces

How To Take Care Of Your Braces

The team at Accorde Orthodontists takes great pride in helping our patients achieve the smile they’ve always wanted. We work diligently to provide you with healthy, straight teeth, but the treatment process can only be successful with a joint effort on both of our parts. That’s why Dr. Hobday, Dr. Helmich and Dr. Mark have compiled this guide on how to care and maintain your braces. Together we can help you achieve a beautiful, stunning smile by ensuring quality orthodontic care combined with a daily home care routine.

Good Habits are Essential

While the team at Accorde Orthodontists works to provide you with an individualized treatment plan and regularly scheduled adjustments and exams, you are responsible for your oral hygiene and eating habits. Your braces can trap food particles which quickly lead to plaque and decay, so brushing and flossing is even more important while you undergo treatment. Here are some good habits to practice while you wear your braces.

Brushing

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to thoroughly clean your teeth and braces after every meal, at least 3 times a day. Our office can also provide you with an interdental toothbrush that cleans the small spaces between your braces.

Flossing

Flossing is more important than usual while undergoing orthodontic treatment, but it’s also a little more difficult. Take extra care to floss every single day, and you may want to start a habit of flossing 2-3 times a day while you wear your braces. The Accorde staff can provide you with a floss threader to make it easier to get in between each bracket and wire.

Eating

Some foods don’t mix well with braces and can cause harm to them. Avoid anything sticky, sweet, hard, or crunchy. That means no popcorn, ice chips, gum, taffy, or nuts while you undergo treatment. You’ll also want to avoid soft drinks and other snack foods laced with sugar.
